Student Supervision 

The welfare of all students enrolled at Jasper Road School is of paramount importance and the teachers take positive measures to ensure student safety.

The official school hours are 8.30 am to 3.00 pm and although teachers are in attendance beyond these times their responsibility for supervising students is restricted to the official hours except when students are involved in:

• Educational excursions approved by the Principal

• Sports coaching

• Tutoring in school instrumental, musical or dance programs.

In each instance parents will be advised of the activities and their approval gained. On each occasion teachers are responsible for the supervision of students for the duration of the activity.

SUPERVISION OF STUDENTS

• Students who enter the school grounds before 8.30 am are to proceed immediately to the area under the big COLA. They are to remain there until a bell sounds at 8.30 am and are not to engage in any games or physical activity. This applies to students in all grades.

• Those students who are to attend coaching, tutoring or any educational activity conducted by the school before 8.30 am are collected by a teacher who provides supervision.

• From 8.30 am to 9.00 am teachers, on a rostered schedule, provide supervision of the playground.

• Students who attend the library between 8.30 am and 9.00 am are supervised by the Teacher-Librarian.

• Lessons commence at 9.00 am and continue until 11.00 am.

• During morning recess, 11.00 am to 11.20 am, teachers are rostered to supervise students in the playground.

• Lessons commence at 11.20 am and continue until 1.05 pm.

• During the first ten minutes of lunch period, 1.05 pm to 1.15 pm, all students eat their lunches in their classrooms under the supervision of their classroom teacher. Students then move to the playground where they are supervised by rostered teachers between 1.15 pm and 2.00 pm.

• Students who attend the library during the lunch breaks are supervised by the Teacher-Librarian.

• Lessons commence at 2.00 pm and continue until 3.00 pm.

• All students are dismissed from class at 3.00 pm and are to leave the school grounds without delay unless they attend: after School Care during which time they are supervised by the staff of that Centre, or coaching / music tutoring, during which time they are supervised by the teacher responsible for that activity.

• Parents, caregivers, the student, transport providers, police and members of the public have a role to play in ensuring the protection and welfare of students travelling to and from school. The Principal and teachers have an educative role to assist in providing for the welfare and safety of students in travelling to and from school.

• During lesson times the teacher in charge of the class is responsible for the supervision of the students in the class.

SAFETY ISSUES

      A responsible adult must be available at 3.00 pm to collect students who are unable to walk home alone.

      A crossing supervisor assists children to cross Jasper Road . Children and adults are required to follow the instructions given by the supervisor. Students must not be left in the care of the crossing supervisor.

     Parents who transport their children to and from school by motor vehicle must park legally and in accord with traffic signs.The school has a Kiss And Drop Zone.

     Only students with physical disabilities are to use the special parking area (pink driveway) for arrival and departure each day.

     Some parents encourage their child to ride a bicycle to school. Children are not to ride bicycles within the school grounds and must place their bicycle in a designated area under lock and chain. The school does not accept responsibility for the security of bicycles within the school grounds. Of course, all riders are to wear helmets. Only students in year four upward are allowed to ride their bicycle to school.

     If a student has not been collected by 3.15 pm they must proceed to the front office. Parents will then be contacted.

     Climbing equipment / Walk and Wheel playground may only be used under teacher supervision.

     Chewing gum is not permitted at school.

     Playing on verandahs, stairs and toilets is prohibited.

     Students are not permitted to leave the playground without the consent of the principal. Parents wishing to collect their child during the day must report to the office and sign their child out.

         Children are not permitted in classrooms outside lesson time unless a teacher is present.

      Running on concrete/bitumen areas is only permitted in organized and supervised situations e.g. PE lessons.

      Bullying will not be tolerated.
